The members of staff were especially keen to support Roundabout (a charity for children with special education needs). Through the years the charity has supported children with learning difficulties including autism, cerebral palsy, Downs syndrome, language delay, developmental delay and behavioural problems. One of their major outlays is for specialist play and communication equipment which is beneficial for both development and fun.

Pictured beside is Sallie Ward (receptionist at Burton) with two children of Roundabout.

The communication equipment donated to them by Embassy of Man will amongst other things help children who cannot speak 'say' aloud what they want to and allow them to make choices and respond to those speaking to them. Other pieces will encourage children with overall communication difficulties to become more involved through interaction. These children, some of whom have physical difficulties, will be able to learn that they can control things and interact with other people through their actions.

The old Chinese Proverb ‘Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day but teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime’ may not be fully applicable to our donation of last quarter but we believe the 25 fishing nets provided to the anglers of PAD Club (Practical Angling for the disabled) will be put to good use and will give hours of relaxation to them.

Martina, our Embassy of Man representative at Burton, recently visited the club and met a few of its members, pictured beside.

In the early 90’s, a group of disabled anglers decided to form their own angling club which would provide accessible and safe fishing for their unique needs. Permission to fish a stretch of the River Trent at Barrow was given by the authorities and soon the fishery and club were established. PAD currently has 26 registered disabled anglers and a few able bodied helpers with funding through memberhip subscriptions and other fundraising efforts.
